From a bit of research I believe that the theme that is being used on a site I manage is causing some issues but I am not sure how to troubleshoot this.
I contacted the original developer that used this theme but have had no response.
I am looking for someone to have a look and see if they can diagnose the problem.
Issues:
Admin panels not working properly
Media Library not loading up
Widgets dropdowns not opening
Posts - can't use the quick edit links - can't change published settings or privacy settings.

Does switching to default theme solves the issues? It can be a plugin conflict as well. Try disabling each plugin one by one and see if the issues resolve.
Amanda comments:
I have been reluctant to switch to the default theme because I can't currently access the widgets that are running.
I have disabled all plugins and this didn't make a difference
Navjot Singh comments:
Switching to the default theme won't make you lose your widgets. Try switching to the default theme and see if your problems go away. If your issue came up after the wordpress update its clear your theme is too old to be compatible with this wordpress version. http://wptavern.com/quick-tip-wordpress-saves-your-widgets
Amanda comments:
Theme switching lets me use the backend parts that are not working with the current theme. So I am sure there is a problem with the theme.
Where do I go from here. How hard is it to diagnose/fix theme problems?
Arnav Joy answers:
Do you have js error ? Are you sure it is problem of this theme or your wordpress installations ?
if changing to default theme not solves this problem then you should keep back up of whole site and upgrade/reinstall wordpress.
Let me know if that helps.
Amanda comments:
the wordpress install is up to date. And the latest update is what has caused the problems. I have uploaded a new wp-admin and wp-includes folder from scratch.
Reigel Gallarde answers:
It's hard to tell what is the problem.
Can you try this please...
Use google chrome browser. Open New Tab. Press ctrl+shift+j then load there a page your site that has a problem. Give us a screenshot of what you find.

Amanda comments:
I didn't do the initial development for this site so I didn't purchase this theme. I have tried to contact the original developer to see if he has the purchase details but he is not getting back to me so I don't think this is an option.
I also know that in development he has not used a child theme so updating is going to quite possibly be a problem.
