Nonprofit Tarski and etc help WordPress

Hi,
I seriously need help. My web developer flaked on me and our nonprofit.

1) I am getting the "white screen of death"....I"m not sure if this is the name but when I make changes in the admin of wordpress, sometimes it'll get a white screen. When I reload it, half the times the changes I made applied; half the time they do not. I recently upgraded WP and that's when this happened. I DID deactivate plugins before doing so...and I did reinstall it manually when it didn't work. <strong>Please help me fix this??</strong>
2) Am using the Tarski theme. I'd actually be interested in switching themes to a more wide looking theme that is (I'm not sure if Tarski is) constantly updated...what reliable but awesome theme should I choose? Guide: I am in love with the charity: water website and I really like the KOBO website. <strong>Which theme? Help</strong>
3) If you don't suggest switching themes, then I'd like to know <strong>how to change the navigation bar in the Tarski theme</strong> so it's not just boring words but more fancy like blocks. This is a second question that only applies if #2 advice is to stay with the Tarski theme because it's awesome--which I'm not experiencing it to be.
4) I'd like to really vamp up the homepage. <strong>Ideas? Designs? </strong>The photos, by the way, are not permanent.

#1 Fixed : This was .maintenance + theme deleted by ... WP (?) so, upload, merge style.css from Maayan with the theme one, same with header and footer.
