How to import a wp_posts.sql file WordPress

  • SOLVED

HI Guys

I have just created a site and imported all of the post from the old site. However my client still had his old site live and while I was working on the new one he created two new blog posts.

the old site is no longer up but the IT guy has sent me an .sql file with the latest posts os i can import.

When I try and run an import in MyphpAdmin I get this error

http://screencast.com/t/Eu3qBZ1jUm

I am importing directly into the wp_posts table, is that correct?

Can you explain my error for me please?

Many thanks
Steve

Eric P. answers:

Since this is only two posts, I think you're trying to do a lot of extra work to "import" the data.

Find the text of the two new posts in the exported SQL. Go in and just create two new posts on your new site and paste the content into the new posts. Don't sweat the SQL. You can manually set the meta data correctly.

Now, if this were 200 posts, then I'd work on some way to merge the two. For 2 post, you'll do less total work if you just create two new posts and paste in the content.

Steve Watson comments:

is that just a matter of opening the .sql file with those two posts in notepad or similar?

Eric P. comments:

Pretty much. Is the file just those two posts? Or is it everything?

The data will be somewhat encoded, but the actual content should be readable.

Steve Watson comments:

Just the 2 posts (I think)

In fact, you could spend all year just getting coached and never go to work.\r\n\r\nAll of this advice is rather like laser tooth whitening: It takes you up a few shades for a while - the shiny new look - and then quickly fades back to something like the original, sometimes with ‘zingers’ along the way.\r\n\r\nI personally have resolved to carry on being “me” in 2011.\r\n\r\nYou see, I’m pretty good already (well, most of the time). I see several posts there.

One titled "'Suicide notes, enthusiasm and disconnections" and the second titled "'The Perfect Imperfectionist". There are a few others as well, some blank, some very small "Thank you" note pages.

There are a couple things you could do.

You could copy/paste those into your new blog. Just copy the "content" part into the content of new posts, set the dates, authors and whatnot to match what they should be in the new environment. The Content is the stuff after the dates on the lines that start with '(1090.....' and continues until the closing single quote followed by a title, and usually 'inherit'...

You could just change the id#'s to something that isn't in your new blog. That would be the '10909' like numbers right after the opening parentheses. You could try changing every occurance of '1090' to '21090' in that file and then import, that would most likely work.

As others have noted, you don't have the matching "wp_postmeta" table data in that SQL. So any meta data ("custom fields") for those posts is not included. If you just import wp_posts, you should still see the posts, I think. If you create the two large posts and just paste the content and titles in, then the blank/default wp_postmeta data will definitely be created.

Navjot Singh answers:

You should drop the table wp_posts first and then import. Because the existing posts already are there and you are trying to overwrite them.

Ofcourse make a backup first.

Steve Watson comments:

I dont want to drop the posts that are already there i need to keep them. I just need to add the last two posts from the old blog but only have them in wp_posts.sql format

Navjot Singh comments:

I am assuming that the new sql file contains all the posts plus 2 new posts? Then you can safely delete the wp_posts table first and reimport. Also like Arnav said, you will also need to do the same for wp_postmeta table as well. Delete the old one and reimport from the new one.

Arnav Joy answers:

This problem is because in new db you have any post whoose id is same as that any if the record in old db.

means as you said the new site has already all the posts from the old site so when you import the db then you got all previous records there and they sre with duplicate key.

so if you have not make any changes in the new installation then take backup of the new wp_posts and wp_postmeta table and then empty theses two tables and then import theses two tables from the old sites.

Let me know if you have understood whst I want to say

Arnav Joy comments:

Please remember wp_postmeta tables are also necessary to create correct entries

Steve Watson comments:

Is it not possible to merge two tables?

I dont really understand what you are saying.

Hariprasad Vijayan answers:

Hi,

Reason for this error is the record with same id(primary key) already in database.

To solve this issue,
Delete already existing record from the file before importing it( It is possible if the tables having same kind of records and you need to update few more post with existing one)

please ask if you have doubt in this

Hariprasad Vijayan comments:

If you have any difficulties in deleting posts from notepad, import it into a database in localhost, delete unwanted posts and export it. Then you can import the file directly into your server database

Hope this will help you
