Extract external Static Google Map image url and make it the post's featured image WordPress

I have many thousands of posts. Each post as a Static Google Map image that is dynamically generated as the page loads. Unfortunately it appears none of the current plugins can recognise the Static Google Map image url.
I'd like
1.a function, or,
2. a modified plugin such as...

that will...
1. extract the google static map image from the url to a local copy.
