BuddyPress custom menu items WordPress

I have added custom menu and sub-menu items in a user's BuddyPress profile by adding these in bp-custom.php in Plugins.

However, in some cases I don't want to create a top level menu item, and want the top menu item (when clicked) to default to showing the first menu item in the sub-navigation.

Need some help setting up these default pages / redirects.

Wouldn't a plugin like this work? If not, what are the parameters for this statement... "in some cases I don't want to create a top level menu item"
